This can include:<\/p>\n<h3>CAD Model<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>New design<\/strong> \u2013 how detailed is the CAD model? Is it complete?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Legacy design<\/strong> \u2013 is the CAD model current with design updates?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Bill-of-Materials (don\u2019t forget fasteners!)<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>New design<\/strong> \u2013 does the BOM need to be completed and\/or verified?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Legacy design<\/strong> \u2013 are there part obsolescence issues? Does the BOM reflect the current design revision?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>2D Drawings<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>New design<\/strong> \u2013 have 2D drawings been created and include tolerancing, material call out, surface finish?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Legacy design<\/strong> \u2013 have the drawings been updated with redlines and \u201cas-builts?\u201d Have manually redlined drawings been put into CAD?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Work\/assembly Instructions (if necessary)<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>New design<\/strong> \u2013 do they exist? Have they been tested with a build?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Legacy design<\/strong> \u2013 do WIs match what is executed on the shop floor?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Test Procedures<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>New design<\/strong> \u2013 has testing been documented, including test equipment?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Legacy design<\/strong> \u2013 will you be providing test stands to your manufacturing partner? Will more test equipment need to be built?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Validation Requirements<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>New design<\/strong> \u2013 what will you provide and what will the manufacturer provide as far as turn over documentation?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Legacy design<\/strong> \u2013 have you provided the manufacturer with documents they are expected to execute and produce?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Tooling<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>New design<\/strong> \u2013 will you be providing tooling and\/or tooling to the contract manufacturer?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Legacy design<\/strong> \u2013 do you have or own the tooling and tooling documentation?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Packaging Considerations<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>New design<\/strong> \u2013 has a packaging design been formalized?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Legacy design<\/strong> \u2013 is the packaging custom? Will it need to be produced internally or purchased?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Issues that Fall Under the \u201cTribal Knowledge\u201d Category<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>New design<\/strong> \u2013 hopefully, this is not an issue.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Legacy design<\/strong> \u2013 potentially a significant issue.\n<ul>\n<li>Undocumented techniques, procedures, or tools.<\/li>\n<li>Knowledge lost due to retirement or job transfer.<\/li>\n<li>Supplier instruction that has not been documented.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It may make sense to leverage your contract manufacturers engineering resources to improve or complete your existing documentation. Funds spent on Non-recurring Engineering (NRE) can pay big dividends during the production phase of your program. It can also be beneficial to contact your manufacturing partner to do a DFM analysis on your existing design. Again, the NRE invested in this activity can produce measurable savings over the course of the program.<\/p>\n<h2>Finding the Right Manufacturing Partner<\/h2>\n<p>A reputable manufacturing partner will have the resources and experience to help you from whatever level of completion you are starting from and fill in the gaps, as necessary.
